Basic Dog Care
Grooming is the behavior of an animal, expressed in the care of its fur or the fur of another individual. Wild animals engage in active grooming during the mating season, when all actions are aimed at attracting the attention of individuals of the opposite sex.
WHAT IS GOMEING IN HOME?
Now dogs are in different conditions. Home maintenance, the absence of a breeding season has led to a weakening of the need for regular grooming. Therefore, dogs can not always take good care of themselves, and they need help to care for their bodies. The features of the breed are influenced by the characteristics of the breed (for example, the length and structure of the coat), and the type of physique, habits, and conditions of detention.
Grooming a domestic dog includes grooming hair, skin, claws, ears, eyes, teeth.
The coat of dogs consists of undercoat (down hair), outer and covering hair and depends on the breed. In this case, the hair of pets can vary in density, length, structure. The main procedures for caring for her are combing, washing and cutting.
Combing prevents the formation of tangles and removes dead hairs. In addition, when combing, you massage the skin of the pet, thereby improving its blood supply. With regular combing, you care not only about the health of the dog, but also about the cleanliness of your home: there will be much less wool on the floor and furniture.
The frequency of combing depends on the type of coat your pet has. Dogs with long hair and developed undercoat must be combed daily. Puppies are recommended to be combed regularly so that they are used to this procedure. When combing, try not to hurt the animal and use special tools: combs, scrapers, brushes, mittens, brushes, chippers, curlers.
HOW OFTEN DO I WANT A DOG?
The frequency of washing depends on the condition of the coat of the animal, the purpose of the dog, the conditions of detention, the presence of skin diseases. On average, dogs are washed 1-2 times a year or as they become dirty, and the frequency of washing is allowed up to 1 time in 1-3 months. Show animals are washed often. Dogs suffering from some skin diseases – 1 time per week. For washing, use specialized shampoos: ordinary, therapeutic, antiparasitic, deodorizing, tinting, bleaching and others. After washing, moisturizing and nourishing lotions, balms that facilitate combing and shine are applied to the dog’s coat.
When it is impossible to wash the dog (aviary, post-vaccination period, illness), it is recommended to use dry shampoos in the form of a powder that are applied with your hands to the animal’s hair and then removed with a comb, it is very convenient for short-haired dogs. For dogs with long hair, grooming sprays (shampoos in the form of a spray) can be used; after applying them, the dogs should be wiped with a damp cloth and combed.
DO I NEED TO CUT THE DOG?
Hygienic grooming of dogs is necessary to maintain the cleanliness of the coat, prevent the formation of mats, in the summer – to improve thermoregulation. Hygienic cutting is recommended when contaminating the animal’s hair with various chemicals (paints, kerosene, tar, etc.). A standard haircut is carried out according to the requirements of the breed. It could be:
edging – shaping (in Spitz);
trimming – plucking of wool (in hard-coated dog breeds);
klipperverk and flatvek – various haircuts to zero;
border milling, blending – creating smooth transitions between the length of the coat (in Yorkshire terriers and cocker spaniels).
Creative haircut – unusual, bright, often combined with coloring, braiding of braids and tails, using jewelry.
Some dogs need to pluck the hairs from the ear canals and cut the hair between their fingers and paw pads.
HOW TO CARE FOR DOGS SKIN, CLAWS, EYES AND EARS?
Skin care includes the removal of dirt, wiping the folds (facial, lip folds, tail), treating the skin between the fingers. To do this, you can use wet zoo-sanitary napkins or lotions. In winter, to protect the skin of the paws from the cold, the fingertips are recommended to be treated with special wax.
Clipping of the claws is carried out as they grow, 1 time in 1-3 months. In animals that actively walk on the street on a hard surface, claw plates can wear off themselves. With improper regrowth, the claw can grow into surrounding tissues, break off, causing anxiety to the dog. For clipping, specialized claws are used that do not break the claw plate. In this case, you must try not to injure the living part of the claw – the pulp containing blood vessels. In some cases, sawing is used to control the length and shape of the claw. Often, a protective coating or colored varnish is applied to the claws of dogs.
Healthy dogs usually do not need to clean their ears; sometimes you can wipe the inside of the ears with a dry cotton pad. In case of increased formation of an ear secret or an inflammatory process, the external auditory canal is processed.
