How to teach a dog the team “Come to me!”

The command “Come to me!” Must be mastered by a dog of any size and breed. The ability to come to the owner at the first call not only demonstrates the obedience of the pet, but can also save his life in a dangerous situation. Do not delay the puppy’s training – the baby is able to learn to fulfill the “Come to Me!” Command already at the age of 1.5 months, after it begins to respond to its nickname. It’s worth teaching a pet this skill even if you are an opponent of training, otherwise the animal will be uncontrollable. After reading the article, you will learn how the dog should execute the “To me!” Command correctly, how to make the learning process effective and fun, what mistakes should not be made during training, which canine experts advise.

The following phrase is popular among dog handlers: “If your dog does not follow the“ Come to me! ”Command, you can assume that you do not have a dog.” And indeed, seeing a bewildered man, screaming loudly, running after a dog, it is difficult to recognize him as a real owner. The “Come to Me!” Team will help prevent dog shoots and protect your pet from risky acts. It is necessary to indulge in raising an animal. Do not turn the dog into a prisoner, forced to always walk on a leash, and daily walks – into hard labor.

Walking a well-bred, trained dog, on the contrary, will bring joy and satisfaction. Just imagine: you come to a park, a forest or a dog’s playground, release your favorite dog from a leash, he is free to frolic and play, but you are sure that when you hear the command “Come to me!” The dog will immediately come running to you. Understanding each other perfectly, both the owner and the dog will feel safe.

Important: start training your puppy as soon as possible, while making sure that he knows his name. If the pet does not respond to the nickname, he will not understand which of the phrases you uttered refer specifically to him. It’s not difficult to find out that the baby is aware of his name: the dog will wag its tail, turn its head and go in your direction. Once the basics of obedience are mastered, you can proceed to the study of the command “Come to me!”.

The correct execution of the command
To teach a dog the command “Come to me!”, The owner must clearly understand what it is and, accordingly, what to demand from a pet. It is important to immediately train the dog to execute the command correctly, and not be content with the fact that it sometimes suits you. Show firmness, confidence and act without haste.

To date, there are two correct options for the execution of the “To me!” Command:

for everyday life – the dog comes to the owner and sits down;
normative – the dog approaches the owner, then goes around it clockwise and sits at the left foot.
In both cases, the “To me!” Command can be divided into 3 stages, which will need to be worked out sequentially:

the pet comes to the owner;
the dog sits opposite the owner, or makes a detour and sits at his left foot;
the dog gets up and behaves freely, after the owner released it with the cancellation command – “Go!”, “Walk!”, “Good!” or another.
Hearing the command “Come to me!”, The dog must immediately respond and resort to the owner. The dog abandons any business and fixes his attention on its owner. It is not enough that the pet runs up to you and immediately rushes back – it must linger nearby. Landing helps the dog concentrate. After sitting near the owner, the furry pet can leave only when he is allowed.

“Come to Me!” Team Training for Daily Use
It is best to start teaching a dog the command “Come to me!” Where it will not be distracted by loud extraneous sounds – in an apartment, house or a secluded corner of the park. In the first lesson, an assistant can significantly help you.

Ask a friend to pick up the puppy. If the dog is already adult, it must be kept on a leash. From your hands give the pet a treat, praise or stroke it. Now your assistant, along with the dog, slowly backs away at a distance of about 1-2 m, while the animal should not lose sight of you. Even if the dog immediately reaches for you, you need to hold it. The puppy should be put on the ground, and the adult dog continues to be on a leash.

Name the pet by name and benevolently command: “Come to me!” You can sit down and pat yourself on the hip. This ends the role of the assistant – he lets the dog go so that she runs to you.

When the pet comes up, praise it well and give it a treat. If the dog does not come, squat down and show him a treat – who will refuse the yummy?
